OSINBAJO GIVES AMBODE APPROVAL TO RECONSTRUCT LAGOS INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT ROAD

in News

Acting President, Professor Yemi Osinbajo, has granted permission to Lagos State Government to embark on a total reconstruction of the International Airport Road from Oshodi.

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, in a statement issued Wednesday by Secretary to the State Government, Mr Tunji Bello, disclosed this, adding that the approval was a 50th birthday gift to the state.

Ambode commended Osinbajo’s “statesman-like approach” to issues and for fast-tracking the process.

“We are very appreciative of the good gesture of His Excellency, Acting President for acceding to our request which is not only very timely but a very heartwarming one. Posterity will never forget this genuine developmental action”, Ambode said

He also described the approval as a further demonstration of the determination of the present administration to ensure the effectiveness of the Executive Order on improving the Ease of Doing Business recently signed by the Acting President.

Governor Ambode gave kudos to President Muhammadu Buhari for providing the enabling environment to attract Foreign Direct Investment into the nation, adding that with the upgrading of the International Airport Road which is the gateway to the nation’s commercial nerve centre, the country will attract new investments.

The governor had in March this year, raised an alarm about the present state of the Muritala Muhammed International Airport Road, describing it as a national disgrace that required immediate attention to salvage the nation’s image.

He stated then that the state has a design for the reconstruction of the road as well as the funds to embark on the project but was being frustrated by the Federal Ministry of Works headed by his predecessor, Babatunde Fashola.

“The road linking Oshodi to the International Airport, you would all agree with me is a national embarrassment,” Ambode had said.

“In the spirit of the regeneration and urbanisation that this administration has set out to achieve, we believe strongly that the image that is exhumed by the decadence of that road must be repaired and we took it upon ourselves to appropriate the 2017 budget that the House of Assembly should approve the total reconstruction of the Airport Road from Oshodi to the International Airport.

“The State currently has a design of 10 lanes to come from Oshodi to the International Airport with interchange and flyover that would drop you towards the Local Airport.

“The contractor is already set to go and everything as I said has been completed and we already have the cash, but alas we are having challenges with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing. This is a Federal and not a State road. The Federal Ministry of Works believes that they should do the road, but they have not been able to do it all these years past.”

Governor Ambode had said if given the approval, his administration was ready to hit the ground running and begin construction of the airport road within two weeks and finish same within a period of six months.

Besides, the governor also implored the federal government to avail the state of the N2 billion appropriated for the Airport Road in the 2017 national budget to carry out the project.

“I just want to appeal to the Federal Ministry of Works, to let go or reimburse us with whatever it is that they are owing us and even if they are not willing to pay us now, we have the money to do it. It is a national disgrace and we would not be part of it. We would like to do it as part of the celebration of Lagos at 50,” Governor Ambode had said then.

But Mr. Fashola had responded to the governor’s claims of being delayed by his ministry, accusing him of misleading Nigerians.

The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing said the delay in granting the request was because the memorandum conveying the request of Lagos State which was already before the Federal Executive Council has not reached completion stage.

“The allegations of lack of cooperation from the Ministry and frustration of Lagos State Government development initiatives are simply not true and the facts do not bear them out,” Mr. Fashola had said in a statement by his spokesperon, Hakeem Bello.

“The Federal Ministry of Power, Works and Housing Ministry has presented the Memorandum conveying the request of the Lagos State Government to the Federal Executive Council as was done with a similar request by the Kaduna State Government in 2016”.

“Due to the fact that TWO of the roads also connect Ogun State, the Federal Executive Council could not reach an immediate decision on them because it requested the input of the other State Government affected.”

AWUJALE LIED IN HIS EVIDENCE IN COURT, SAYS OWOYEMI

in News

* YOU ARE NOT OF ROYAL BLOOD, AWUJALE TO OWOYEMI IN COURT

Adeyemmy  Dalemo

Embattled head of Fusengbuwa ruling house in Ijebu-Ode, Otunba Abdullateef Owoyemi says the Awujale and Paramount ruler of Ijebuland, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona lied while being cross examined in court.

The Paramount ruler had appeared before Justice A.O Asenuga in a case instituted by Owoyemi challenging the conferment and recognition given to Otunba Michael Olasubomi Balogun as the authentic head of the Fusengbuwa ruling house.

Awujale who was dressed in red agbada made from Ankara fabric and a white cap was cross examined by the plantif counsel, Barrister Adesegun Adebayo.

During the cross examinations, Awujale denied having knowledge of some exhibits which were letters alleged to have emanated from his palace with his signatures.

According to the exhibits marked exhibit A and E, Awujale told the court that he was not sure of the origin of the documents confirming the plaintiff as an Otunba of ijebuland.

In his evidence, Awujale told the court that Jadiara family came from Ekiti state after commuting an offence and came to the palace of Awujale to seek refuge.

According to him, the tradition says anyone who is seeking refuge at the palace of an Oba is safe from prosecution and punishment.

He said that was the exact situation of the fore fathers of the plaintiff, referring to them as 'asaforiji' meaning he ran into the palace to be forgiven of whatever offence he had committed.

He also narrated that the great grand mother of the plaintiff are referred to as 'Ara-saya' which means bought with a price to become one's wife saying they were never from the ruling house originally and can't claim that they were from the Fusengbuwa royal house.

Oba Adetona also told the court that it was corruption of the royal blood that made the plaintiff to be thinking that because his family had spent more time at the palace of the then reigning Oba Fusengbuwa he could now contest and that gave the plaintiff the effrontery to be laying claim to being an original member of the ruling house.

Awujale also told the court that he personally agreed to come to the court to stop what he described as distortion and misinterpretation of Ijebu customs.

"I don't want it to happen again, this mis-interpretation of customs that is why I am here, Enough of this rubbish" Awujale told the court facing Justice Asenuga.

Reacting to the court proceeding, the Plaintiff Otunba Lateef Owoyemi told some members of the ruling house who are allegedly loyal to him that he wonder why the Paramount ruler who swore with an Holy Quran could be telling lies to the court throughout his testimony before the court.

He said, "how can Kabiyesi who made me Otunba Jadiara claimed that he gave me the title to pacify me when am allegedly running mad?"

He said, "he gave me the title when I was the President of the Institute of Chattered Accounts of Nigeria and then I was very useful to him because, according to Kabiyesi I was very useful, hardworking and even travelled abroad with him to get some items from overseas for the palace".

Owoyemi said, he was however delighted despite the evidence of Kabiyesi that he acknowledged that he was useful and hardworking, qualities of some of the people the Paramount ruler bestowed chieftaincy title on.

Counsel to the plaintiff , Barrister Adesegun Adebayo and the defence counsel Tunji Ayanlaja S.A.N, both agreed on the adjournment date for the suit.

The case was adjourned till 6th of July for further hearing

MANY FEARED DEAD AS NAVAL OFFICERS ATTACK POLICE STATION

in News

Several police officers are feared to have been killed Tuesday night after suspected officials of the Nigerian Navy stormed a police division in Calabar, southern Nigeria.

Witnesses said the attack, which began shortly after 8:30 p.m., was still underway as at 10:19 p.m. at Akim Divisional Headquarters.

“The police station is still burning as we speak,” a horrified witness said.

Naval spokesperson, Suleiman Dahun, said he wasn’t aware of the development as at 10:26 p.m., promising to revert after his findings.

Police spokesperson, Jimoh Moshood, could not be reached for comments Tuesday night.

Sources said the unrest was a continuation of an initial skirmish between a police traffic officer and a naval officer at a traffic light near the Calabar Stadium along the Airport Road on Tuesday afternoon.

“Some naval officers ran the red light and police traffic officers intervened, but rather than listen, they descended on the policemen and beat them up,” a witness said.

 “This was around 5 p.m.”

“Police officers now called for back up and and the Navy also called for reinforcement and they took over the road leading to the airport.

“But the Navy Commander and police commissioner in the state intervened and the two sides backed down,” the witness said.

“However, around 8.00 pm, when everyone thought the matter had been resolved, naval officers descended on Akim Police Station and started shooting and burnt down the facility.

“We confirmed three bodies but we feared there are more,” the witness said.

The witness also accused the naval officers of blocking fire fighters from extinguishing the inferno set at the police station

RESIGN IF YOU LOVE NIGERIA, FAYOSE TELLS BUHARI

in News

Governor Ayodele Fayose has urged President Muhammadu Buhari to resign if he truly loves the country.

Fayose said Buhari’s sickness was frustrating development of the country.

Addressing journalists in Lagos on Tuesday, the Ekiti State Governor took a swipe at the Federal Government’s anti-corruption war.

He said fighting corruption was not limited to discovering large sums of money but doing the right thing at the right time.

According to him, resigning from his job as President would show that Buhari is morally upright.

While giving a scorecard of the All Progressives Congress-led Federal Government in the last two years, Fayose said the party had failed to deliver on its promises.

He said, “So far, the APC-led Federal Government has been a government of misadventure and Nigerians are the worse for it. They say they are fighting corruption but they are shielding corrupt elements within their fold.

“Members of the opposition defect to the APC for protection. Fighting corruption is more than discovering huge sums of money, with nobody being linked to the funds.

“He can do us the great help by resigning. Not resigning stains his integrity. His absence (from the country) allows others to suppress and oppress others; that means he is allowing others to suppress their fellow human beings.

“We need an active President with the country’s numerous challenges. How long will Nigerians wait for an incapacitated president?

“We cannot wait again for somebody to hold us to ransom. I don’t have any bad blood against Buhari. (Acting President Prof. Yemi) Osinbajo has no powers without the President. He owes us the duty to tell us the state of his health,” the governor said.

While also assessing the country’s economy, Fayose said it was unfortunate that it had gone from bad to worse.

He noted that the middle-class had been wiped out.

“There is no middle-class any more. Economic indicators are not cheery at all. They borrow money on a daily basis and committing funds that ought to accrue to all tiers of government to service the loans,” he added.

Fayose insisted that the Chibok girls’ controversy was used to blackmail former President Goodluck Jonathan.

The governor also scored Buhari low on securing the country, maintaining that more people had been killed by insurgents and herdsmen than in any other period in the history of Nigeria.

He wondered why no Fulani herdsmen had been arrested and prosecuted despite the atrocities perpetrated across the country.

PROTEST: UI SUSPENDS STUDENTS' UNIONISM

in News

An emergency meeting of the Senate of the University of Ibadan was called on Tuesday where it was decided that students’ union activities on the campus should be suspended until further notice.

Undergraduate students of the institution were also asked to vacate their halls of residence before 6pm on Tuesday after they disobeyed the order to do so on Monday.

The decision followed Monday closure of the university by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Idowu Olayinka, after students staged a protest, blocking the busy Mokola-Ojoo Road, thereby causing gridlock for several hours.

The students had given the school management an ultimatum to constitute a Students’ Welfare Board and set up a committee to look into the use of electric-powered cooking appliances in the hostels and issuance of identity cards before their first semester examination.

The examination had been scheduled to start in June but it was postponed till July 17, 2017.

The university had stated that it was illegal to use electric cooking appliances in halls of residence in accordance with the agreement reached between the students and the school in 2014.

The university's Director of Public Communication, Mr. Olatunji Oladejo, told our correspondent that the Senate reviewed circumstances that led to the protest before taking the decision.

LAGOS CAN HIRE AND FIRE CHAPLAIN - CAN

in News

Lagos Chapter of Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) on Monday said the state Government has the powers to  appoint and sack any chaplain in the state chapel.

The state CAN Chairman, Apostle Alexander Bamigbola, who spoke on the recent sack of the Presiding Chaplain of  Chapel of Christ the Light, Venerable Femi Taiwo, said the body would investigate the preacher’s sack.

He also accused the media of blowing the matter out of proportion.

“The church Governing Council has the constitutional responsibility to recruit and terminate the appointments of officers running the chapel. Two officers run the affairs of the chapel – the Presiding Chaplain and the Chaplain. POLICE ACCUSE 2 MEN OF MISLEADING THEM TO SEARCH EKWEREMADU'S BUILDING

in News

Nigeria Police on Tuesday arraigned a 50-year-old man, Ahmed Echodo, for allegedly misleading the police to conduct a raid at a building belonging to the Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Friday.

According to the one-count charge, two defendants were accused of the offence, although only Mr. Echodo was arraigned at a magistrate court in Abuja.

Security operatives had ransacked Mr. Ekweremadu’s building on Friday morning following information accusing the occupants of criminal offences. They found nothing incriminating during the search.

Security officers at the building located in Ganges street, Maitama, Abuja, said that the raid was conducted by police officers, on the instruction of the Inspector General of Police, IGP, Ibrahim Idris.

Although that claim was denied by police spokesperson, Moshood Jimoh, the police on Tuesday charged the two men on a one-count of misleading the Nigeria Police.

According to the charge, the men, Messers Echodo and Maiwada Adamu, are accused of conspiring to falsely inform the office of the IGP that the building, occupied by Oliver Ogenyi, is being maintained and used for criminal activities including storage of arms and ammunition.

The second accused, Mr. Adamu, was not in court while the first defendant pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Prosecution counsel, Ismail Tawo, informed the court that Mr. Adamu was at large.

The magistrate, Umar Kagarko, asked the police to find Mr. Adamu and present him in court at the next sitting.

Counsel to the defence, Peter Ngwoke, prayed the court to grant his client bail.

Mr. Kagarko adjourned till June 5, for ruling on the bail application.
